Professor, Geography & Environmental Systems

My research investigates the ecology of anthropogenic landscapes and their changes at local to global scales. Current work in mylab has three main foci:human transformation of the biosphere (anthromes, anthroecology), tools for global synthesis of local knowledge oflandscape change (GLOBE), andinexpensivetools for measuring and managing ecologicalchange across anthropogenic landscapes (Ecosynth, Anthropogenic Ecotope Mapping). All of these cometogether in my main goal: informing sustainable stewardship ofthe biosphere in the Anthropocene. My earlier work investigatedlong-term ecological changesacrossChina’s village landscapes. I teach courses in environmentalscience and landscape ecology at UMBC, and I’ve taught ecologyat Harvard’s Graduate School of Design. I amcurrently a member of the Anthropocene Working Group, a Fellow of the Global Land Programme, a Senior Fellow of the Breakthrough Institute, and an advisorto the Nature Needs Half movement. I’ve publishedmore than 100 scientific articles, and I’m recognized as a global highly cited researcher (top 1%, Cross Field) My first book, Anthropocene: A Very Short Introduction, waspublished in 2018.
